I selected this particular DVD to review as I was intrigued to see how life on Planet Shirov would treat the ultra-solid Slav Defence. While Magnus is now the top player his game is still prone to error. And it's not a recent suck, this one dates back to my fifth birthday when my highly skilled and very patient father finally patted me on the shoulder, and kindly suggested a lively game of Animal Rummy instead. Feb 8, 2010 - He was playing enterprising and attacking chess, not holding back. Jul 4, 2008 - My Best Games in the Slav and Semi-Slav By GM Alexei Shirov Chessbase. Posted by David Friedman at 3:44 PM. Jan 10, 2013 - It's the kind of suck that has me digesting things like Vukovic's Art of the Attack in Chess, Heisman's Elements of Positional Evaluation, and Shirov's Fire on the Board and still losing in three moves to a drunken goat in plaid lederhosen chain-smoking Pall Malls. There's nothing wrong with 60-move rook endings, but as chess fans most of us – myself included – would rather see his “fire on board” approach instead. Mar 10, 2011 - He often sacrifices material easily in return for initiative and complications where he always seems to be just one step ahead of his opponent – following Shirov's games is like watching “fire on the board”. During the game I thought eliminating the a-pawn with Nc1 was the best path. Jan 16, 2010 - There was good fighting chess in the first segment accented by Alexi Shirov's “Fire on Board” act. May 18, 2012 - Borrowing from the title of Alexei Shirov's collected games, Kasparov said that he hopes to see "more fire on board" in the second half of the match. Dec 8, 2013 - And so the exhibition match between Alexei Shirov and Daniil Dubov has come to an end with a draw in game 6. As after game 1, a draw in the classical game meant they had to play blitz afterwards, and the results points and probably some confidence, and hopefully presages a return to better things for him. This is the Shirov we come to love and admire.
